Canadiens sign David Desharnais to 2-Year Deal

A busy day for Pierre Gauthier, after getting Max Pacioretty to sign for 2 years this morning, he does the same with David Desharnais this evening.

$750K next year and $950K the year after, for an annual cap hit of $850K. Pretty solid value. If he were to sign for more than one year, which he did, I anticipated about a $1M cap hit.

The contract is the first one-way deal of Desharnais's career, meaning he would make his full salary even playing in the AHL. But given that he'd have to clear waivers to be sent down, it was already a sure thing he would stick in Montreal.

With Lars Eller unsure to be ready in time for training camp, Desharnais will have the first chance to impress and win the third line center role. Like Pacioretty, Desharnais will still be an RFA at contract's end.
