And Just When it Looked Like Habs Were Out...

Bob McKenzie

Yep, that's right. All the talk around Jaromir Jagr was focused on the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings. But there would be occasional references to a "third undisclosed team" that was still in the running.

From all accounts, it sounded like Pierre Gauthier wasn't interested, but it is just as possible that he simply preferred to handle his internal dockets first, and now that they are almost all taken care of, he has a better chance to look at the Czech star.

I maintain that Jagr would be a good fit for the Habs, should Montreal really be the third team still in contention for his services. File this one under "unlikely, but hey, you never know."

It would make some sense that the Canadiens were the "mystery team" as they generally like to keep their operations under tight wraps. Gauthier is addressing the media in a pre-draft press conference this afternoon/evening, so I'm sure it will come up and his reaction to the question may be telling. Then again, it's Gauthier, so we're more likely to get a "we're still in the process of evaluating our team, and will continue to do so in the days and weeks to come as opportunities present themselves."
