Habs Sign Erik Cole

The Montreal Canadiens have signed winger Erik Cole to a 4 year deal for a total of $18M ($4.5M cap hit).

Cole, 32, would add size and toughness to the Montreal top 6, weighing in at 6'2" and 205 lbs.

He looked at a young age to be developing into a power forward star in the NHL, but injuries and personal issues derailed his development. He had a bounce back year in 2010-11 with the Hurricanes, playing all 82 games and registering 26 goals and 52 points.

If you've been following our blog, you've seen that we've twice put Cole near the top of our UFA want list, so this is a huge coup for Pierre Gauthier.

While the term and dollar amount is slightly on the high side, it seems very fair given other contracts around the league today. In an interview on TSN, Cole says he called Brian Gionta as soon as caught wind of the Canadiens' interest in him, and Gionta raved about the organization and city. This sold Cole on the offer.
